H.C. Potter's "Second Chorus" from 1940 is a lively musical comedy that, despite its charming premise, doesn't quite reach the soaring heights of its genre contemporaries. Fred Astaire and Paulette Goddard star as a pair of ambitious trumpet players, Danny O'Neill and Hank Taylor, who find themselves vying for the attention of the talented bandleader Artie Shaw and his manager, Ellen Miller. The plot, which involves a playful rivalry between the two musicians as they attempt to outmaneuver each other for a spot in Shaw's band, offers ample opportunity for comedic and musical set pieces. While Astaire delivers his usual impeccable performance, showcasing his signature grace and comedic timing, the film's true strength lies in its energetic musical numbers, featuring the legendary Artie Shaw and his orchestra. Goddard provides a capable foil to Astaire, and their on-screen chemistry is palpable. However, the narrative occasionally gets bogged down in its own convoluted schemes, and the romantic subplot, while present, feels somewhat secondary to the musical competition.
