SECOND CHORUS

Cinemavixion Review

"Second Chorus" offers a charming, if somewhat lighthearted, dive into the competitive world of aspiring musicians. Fred Astaire and Paulette Goddard shine as Danny O'Neill and Ellen Miller, respectively, their performances infused with the expected grace and comedic timing. The narrative, which pits two trumpet players against each other for a coveted spot in Artie Shaw's band, provides ample opportunity for musical numbers and playful rivalry. While the plot may tread familiar ground, the direction by H.C. Potter keeps the pacing brisk and the ensemble cast, including a notable turn by Artie Shaw himself, delivers engaging performances. Nominated for two Academy Awards, this 1940 musical comedy is a pleasant diversion, particularly for fans of classic Hollywood song-and-dance numbers and the enduring appeal of Astaire's artistry.
