SEASON OF THE WITCH

Cinemavixion Review

Peter Goddard's 'Season of the Witch' plunges viewers into the unsettling isolation of Maiden Hollow, a village shrouded in mystery and insular tradition. The narrative centers on Mary Blackwell and her children as they navigate the unwelcoming atmosphere of her late father's hometown. Beth Kingston delivers a compelling performance as Mary, grounding the film amidst escalating psychological tension. The true heart of the unease, however, lies in the character of Michael Howdy, whose fixation on Mary's daughter Alice hints at a deeper, more disturbing psychological landscape. The film masterfully blurs the lines between reality and delusion, leaving the audience to question the nature of Alice's connection to Michael's tragic past. Goddard’s direction cultivates a palpable sense of dread, amplified by the insular community's swift and brutal response to perceived transgression. This is a somber exploration of grief, mental fragility, and the consequences of misunderstanding, presented with a chilling, atmospheric touch.
