SCARLETT

Cinemavixion Review

The 1994 miniseries 'Scarlett' attempts to continue the epic saga initiated by 'Gone With the Wind,' following the indomitable Scarlett O'Hara after Rhett Butler's departure. Starring Joanne Whalley in the titular role, with Timothy Dalton as Rhett Butler, the production ventures beyond the familiar landscapes of Georgia to explore Scarlett's familial roots in Ireland and her complex relationships with Ashley Wilkes and a host of new characters. The narrative, spanning multiple episodes, delves into Scarlett's business acumen and her struggle to maintain her position in a society still reeling from the Civil War. While Whalley embodies Scarlett's fiery spirit and stubbornness, the series grapples with the immense shadow of its predecessor. The miniseries, which garnered two Primetime Emmy Awards, showcases a robust ensemble cast including Annabeth Gish and Sean Bean, contributing to a visually rich, albeit lengthy, exploration of Scarlett's later life and her enduring quest for love and security. It offers a poignant, if at times melodramatic, continuation of a beloved literary and cinematic icon.
