Cinemavixion Review

Christy Cabanne's "SCARED TO DEATH" presents a chilling gothic atmosphere, amplified by its recently remastered color presentation. The narrative centers on the sinister machinations within a private mental institution, expertly helmed by George Zucco as the calculating Dr. Josef Van Ee. The psychological tension is palpable as he and his son, Ward (Roland Varno), manipulate the fragile Laura (Molly Lamont). The arrival of Bela Lugosi as the magician professor Leonide, accompanied by the striking presence of Angelo Rossitto as Indigo, injects a potent dose of the uncanny. Lugosi, in particular, brings his signature gravitas to a role that oscillates between the theatrical and the truly menacing. While the film leans into its period melodrama, the performances, especially Zucco's cold intellect and Lugosi's enigmatic aura, make "SCARED TO DEATH" a compelling exploration of familial control and psychological torment.
