RUBEN GUTHRIE

Cinemavixion Review

Brendan Cowell's directorial debut, 'Ruben Guthrie', plunges into the tumultuous life of its titular character, a man whose celebrated ad career and idyllic lifestyle are shattered by a public drunken mishap. The film, starring Patrick Brammall in a compelling performance, masterfully navigates the complexities of addiction and the societal pressures that can exacerbate it. Cowell, who also penned the screenplay, draws from personal experience to craft a narrative that is both raw and darkly humorous. The plot follows Ruben's arduous journey through a year of sobriety, a challenge set by his departing fiancée, as he grapples with a city that seems determined to keep him tethered to his destructive habits. Supported by strong performances from Alex Dimitriades and Abbey Lee, 'Ruben Guthrie' offers a poignant, albeit sometimes bleak, exploration of self-destruction and the arduous path to redemption. Despite its modest reception, the film stands as a testament to Cowell's skill as a storyteller and his unflinching look at the darker facets of Australian urban life.
