ROYAL HOUSE OF SAXE COBURG AND GOTHA

Cinemavixion Review

The documentary "Royal House of Saxe Coburg and Gotha" meticulously charts the improbable ascent of a seemingly minor ducal family to the pinnacle of European royalty. Director Julia Melchior expertly navigates the intricate web of alliances and strategic marriages that propelled the Coburgs onto the global stage in the 19th century. The film vividly illustrates their influence, extending to the royal houses of Belgium and Bulgaria, and their significant connections to the British and Portuguese monarchies. Through engaging anecdotes and a visually rich presentation, Melchior uses key biographies to unravel the story of a dynasty that became arguably the most pan-European of its era. Featuring insights from former Bulgarian King Simeon and access to Belgian royal residences, the documentary offers a compelling look at the dynastic ambition and enduring legacy of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
