ROGUE TRADER

Cinemavixion Review

James Dearden's "Rogue Trader" plunges into the high-stakes world of international finance, recounting the true story of Nick Leeson's spectacular rise and fall. Ewan McGregor delivers a compelling performance as the ambitious trader whose unchecked actions led to the collapse of the venerable Barings Bank. The film masterfully captures the intoxicating allure of wealth and power, juxtaposed with the devastating consequences of greed and deceit. McGregor's portrayal is nuanced, showing Leeson's initial charm and drive morphing into desperation as his fraudulent activities spiral out of control. Anna Friel provides solid support as his wife, Lisa, caught in the malstrom of his decisions. While the film may not delve into the deepest complexities of financial markets, it excels as a gripping character study and a cautionary tale, effectively portraying the human element behind a seismic financial event. Its narrative momentum, underscored by McGregor's central performance, makes for a thought-provoking and engaging cinematic experience.
