RITE OF THE SHAMAN

Cinemavixion Review

Alicia Oberle Farmer's 'Rite of the Shaman' is a poignant and deeply personal drama that delves into the complexities of grief, family, and self-discovery. The film centers on Kai, a mute high school student grappling with the impending loss of his mother while navigating the turbulent waters of adolescence. Drawing strength from his heritage as the grandson of a shaman and his passion for botany, Kai's journey is one of profound emotional struggle. The narrative skillfully explores Kai's internal conflict as he confronts his 'shadow self,' wrestling with depression and the urge to isolate himself. The film is praised for its sensitive portrayal of these challenges, highlighting how even seemingly small actions can ripple outwards, affecting those around us. Despite a modest box office performance of $16,210 and a 4.2 rating on IMDb, 'Rite of the Shaman' has garnered attention, including 27 wins and 6 nominations, suggesting a significant impact within its festival circuits or among its audience. Farmer's direction, coupled with a compelling performance from Tyrell Oberle, makes this an affecting exploration of healing and resilience.
