RISE OF THE ZOMBIES

Cinemavixion Review

In the grim landscape of a zombie apocalypse, "Rise of the Zombies" (2012) presents a familiar yet occasionally engaging scenario. Directed by Nick Lyon, the film traps a desperate group of survivors within the iconic walls of Alcatraz Island. The premise quickly shifts from a besieged sanctuary to a perilous exodus as the undead breach their refuge, forcing the protagonists back into the zombie-infested mainland. The narrative, while treading well-worn zombie genre paths, offers a sense of urgency as the survivors seek a potential cure, a plot point highlighted in both the local description and external data. Starring Mariel Hemingway and Ethan Suplee, the film attempts to add a layer of gravitas to its survivalist tale. Although the film garnered one nomination according to external data, its reception, as indicated by a 3.6/10 rating on IMDb, suggests a mixed to negative critical response. Nevertheless, for fans of the undead genre seeking a straightforward, action-oriented survival story set against a unique historical backdrop, "Rise of the Zombies" offers a competent, if not groundbreaking, addition to the subgenre.
