RESURRECTION

Cinemavixion Review

Kristof Hoornaert's 2017 drama, "Resurrection," offers a stark and compelling exploration of isolation and unexpected human connection. The film centers on an elderly hermit, masterfully portrayed by Johan Leysen, who has meticulously constructed a life of solitude, detached from the complexities of society. His meticulously ordered world is irrevocably disrupted by the appearance of a young, mute stranger, found near his property and brought into his isolated dwelling out of a flicker of compassion. What unfolds is a slow-burn tension, as the hermit's self-imposed exile begins to erode, replaced by a growing mystery surrounding the visitor's origins and intentions. Gilles De Schryver delivers a nuanced performance as the enigmatic stranger, whose presence challenges the hermit's carefully maintained detachment. With a runtime of 110 minutes and recognized with 4 wins and 3 nominations, "Resurrection" is a powerful character study that delves into the primal instincts of kindness and the profound impact even a single, unexpected encounter can have on a life defined by solitude. The film's minimalist approach and atmospheric tension make it a thought-provoking piece for those seeking intimate and character-driven cinema.
