RAIN

Cinemavixion Review

Lewis Milestone's "Rain" plunges into the moral complexities of the South Pacific, presenting a taut psychological drama centered on the clash between Sadie Thompson, a prostitute newly arrived, and the fanatical missionary Mr. Davidson. Joan Crawford delivers a compelling performance as Sadie, a woman wrestling with her past and her present circumstances. Walter Huston is chilling as the zealous Davidson, whose rigid convictions unravel into obsession. The film masterfully explores themes of sin, redemption, and the hypocrisy that can lie beneath outward piety. Despite its 1932 origins, "Rain" retains a potent intensity, buoyed by Milestone's assured direction and the stark performances. Its critical acclaim, including a remarkable 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, and notable box office success, underscore its enduring power as a study of human nature under pressure.
