RAIN

Cinemavixion Review

This adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's steamy novella offers a compelling, if at times melodramatic, exploration of sin and salvation. Joan Crawford delivers a powerhouse performance as Sadie Thompson, the defiant prostitute whose presence on the island of Pago Pago ignites the fanatical zeal of missionary Alfred Davidson, played with chilling intensity by Walter Huston. Director Lewis Milestone masterfully builds tension, contrasting the tropical paradise with the simmering psychological conflict. While the 1932 production may feel dated to some, its raw emotionality and exploration of hypocrisy remain potent. The film is a fascinating character study, examining the destructive power of repressed desires and the corrosive nature of judgment, all set against an exotic locale that amplifies the underlying drama.
