John P. McCarthy's "Raiders of the Border" from 1944 is a briskly paced Western that delivers on its premise of undercover law enforcement. Starring the reliable Johnny Mack Brown as Marshal Nevada and Raymond Hatton as his partner Sandy, the film plunges into a world of jewel smugglers operating along the border. The plot, penned by Adele Buffington and Johnston McCulley, cleverly employs Sandy's guise as a nearly deaf wagon driver to infiltrate the smuggling ring. His "accidental" breakage of a piece of pottery reveals the hidden jewels, setting the stage for the inevitable confrontation.
