RACIST HOLLYWOOD'S DISTURBING HISTORY WITH YELLOWFACE AND WHITEWASHING

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary, helmed by Clara and Julia Kuperberg, offers a critical examination of Hollywood's historical portrayal of Japan and its people, a narrative often marred by yellowface and whitewashing. The film meticulously traces the evolution of these problematic depictions, noting how events like the Pearl Harbor attacks in 1941 spurred the production of films such as 'The Purple Heart' and 'Know Your Enemy: Japan,' which significantly influenced public perception of the conflict. Through insightful commentary and compelling film clips from titles including 'The Purple Heart,' 'December 7th,' 'The Teahouse of the August Moon,' 'Sayonara,' 'The Japanese War Bride,' 'The Crimson Kimono,' 'House of Bamboo,' 'Tokyo Joe,' and 'Breakfast at Tiffany's,' the Kuperbergs, alongside contributors like film critic Joseph McBride, author Nancy Wang Yuen, actress Tamlyn Tomita, and Japanese film history expert Dan Akira, reveal the profound and lasting impact of cinema on societal attitudes and historical memory. It serves as a vital reminder of how the silver screen has shaped, and often distorted, our understanding of different cultures and historical events.
