POKER WITH PISTOLS

Cinemavixion Review

Giuseppe Vari's 'Poker with Pistols' (1967) is a curious entry in the Spaghetti Western canon, offering a blend of professional gambling and criminal underworld intrigue. The narrative follows Lucas and Terrail, seasoned players aiming to establish their own enterprise, a venture that directly challenges the authority of a shadowy 'Master' controlling the nation's illicit dealings. Their ambition is met with resistance, and the introduction of Lazar, a law enforcer, promises a confrontation that is both personal and systemic. The film navigates themes of ambition, loyalty, and the corrupting influence of power, set against the rugged backdrop typical of the genre. While the plot may veer into complex territory, the performances, particularly from George Hilton and George Eastman, anchor the story, providing a compelling human element amidst the escalating tensions. This film offers a unique perspective on the genre, focusing on the strategic and often dangerous world of high-stakes poker intertwined with broader criminal machinations.
