Cinemavixion Review

David Duchovny stars as Dr. Eugene Sands in Andy Wilson's 1997 thriller 'Playing God.' Once a respected surgeon, Sands finds his life irrevocably altered after a drug-fueled mistake leads to the loss of his medical license. His descent into the criminal underworld begins when he crosses paths with Raymond Blossom, an infamous counterfeiter, and is coerced into serving as a "gun-shot doctor" for Blossom's associates. As Sands is drawn deeper into this dangerous milieu, he becomes entangled with his boss's girlfriend, blurring the lines between his past and a perilous present. Despite a promising premise and a cast that includes Timothy Hutton and a young Angelina Jolie, the film garnered a lukewarm reception, reflected in its 16% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.6/10 on IMDb. While 'Playing God' explores themes of redemption and the allure of a dangerous lifestyle, it struggled to fully capitalize on its potential, ultimately grossing just over $4 million at the box office. It remains a noteworthy, if flawed, entry in the crime thriller genre of the late 90s.
