PERSONAL EFFECTS

Cinemavixion Review

David Hollander's 'Personal Effects' (2009) delves into the profound and often messy aftermath of grief, anchored by a compelling ensemble cast. The film follows Walter (Ashton Kutcher), a young wrestler grappling with the sudden death of his sister. His journey home unearths a complex tapestry of loss, as he encounters Linda (Michelle Pfeiffer), a woman also navigating her own bereavement following her husband's murder. Their shared experiences forge an unlikely bond, offering solace and a path towards healing, particularly as Walter mentors Linda's son, Clay, in wrestling. The narrative skillfully explores how individuals process tragedy, from the quiet desolation of a rummage sale to the tense anticipation of a courtroom verdict. While the film received one nomination, its strength lies in its sensitive portrayal of human connection amidst despair, making it a poignant exploration of resilience and the enduring impact of loss.
