PARIS REBUILT: THE 19TH CENTURY PLAN THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary embarks on a fascinating exploration of France's architectural and spiritual landscape, focusing on the transformative power of ambition and faith. It masterfully connects the divine apparitions in Lourdes, which birthed a major pilgrimage complex, with the sweeping urban redevelopment of 19th-century Paris under Baron Haussmann. The narrative vividly portrays how Haussmann's vision, commissioned by Napoléon III, dramatically reshaped the French capital with wide boulevards and uniform facades, creating the modern cityscape while erasing centuries of history. Furthermore, the film delves into the monumental legacy of Napoléon I, highlighting iconic structures like the Arc de Triomphe and the Vendôme Column, alongside essential infrastructure projects that solidified his empire. It's a compelling study of how imperial will and religious devotion have indelibly marked the architectural soul of France, offering viewers a rich understanding of these monumental shifts.
