OUT OF CONTROL: BRITAIN’S PRISONS ON THE BRINK

Cinemavixion Review

The UK prison system faces a dire crisis, vividly illustrated in "Out of Control: Britain’s Prisons on the Brink." This documentary offers an unflinching look at the harsh realities within correctional facilities, utilizing footage captured by inmates to expose the pervasive issues of violence, drug abuse, and systemic neglect. The film chronicles significant events, such as the major riot at HMP Birmingham, and delves into the tragic consequences of self-inflicted deaths and psychological distress. It highlights the critical factors contributing to this breakdown, including severe staff shortages, budget cuts, hazardous conditions, and the widespread smuggling of psychoactive substances like Spice. Through the perspectives of overburdened officers, inmates serving indefinite sentences, and affected families, the documentary serves as a stark warning about the societal implications of neglecting the prison system. It is a powerful, albeit grim, examination of a system pushed to its absolute limit.
