ORDINARY MAGIC

Cinemavixion Review

Giles Walker's "Ordinary Magic" offers a poignant coming-of-age narrative, anchored by a remarkably assured performance from a young Ryan Reynolds in his feature film debut. The film sensitively explores the complexities of identity and cultural assimilation as Reynolds' character, an Indian-raised Canadian boy, navigates his return to Ontario after his father's death. Inspired by Gandhian principles, his journey becomes a quiet testament to the power of non-violent resistance in the face of adversity, as he rallies his new community to protect what matters. The narrative, based on Malcolm Bosse's novel, weaves themes of loss, belonging, and cross-cultural understanding into a compelling drama. "Ordinary Magic" is a heartfelt and thought-provoking piece that resonates with its exploration of personal values and quiet courage, offering a mature reflection on finding one's voice in unfamiliar territory.
