ORDER OF THE GOLDEN DAWN: THE MYSTERIOUS VICTORIAN OCCULT SOCIETY

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary delves into the fascinating history of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a Victorian-era secret society that emerged from a spiritual vacuum in late 19th-century London. Founded by William Wescott, William Robert Woodman, and Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, the Order purported to draw its authority from enigmatic "Cipher Manuscripts" and the wisdom of unseen "Secret Chiefs." Its curriculum, a rich tapestry woven from Hermetic Qabalah, alchemy, and other mystical traditions, was notably progressive for its time, welcoming women and attracting prominent figures like the poet W.B. Yeats. The narrative skillfully traces the Order's rise and eventual fragmentation, fueled by internal power struggles, most notably involving the controversial Aleister Crowley. While the society ultimately dissolved by 1939, its profound and enduring influence on contemporary occultism and mystical thought is undeniable, making this an essential watch for anyone interested in the hidden currents of history and esoteric traditions.
