ONLY LOVE DEFIES

Cinemavixion Review

Giorgio Bontempi's 1973 film, 'Only Love Defies,' offers a compelling, albeit gritty, look into the cutthroat world of international business set against the vibrant backdrop of Africa. The narrative skillfully intertwines themes of corporate avarice with personal entanglements, as a group of unscrupulous financiers vie for a lucrative contract. Anchored by strong performances from Calvin Lockhart as the shrewd industrialist Kofi and George Hilton and Anita Strindberg as a couple caught in the machinations, the film explores the corrupting influence of wealth and the complexities of inter-racial relationships in a post-colonial landscape. Bontempi crafts a suspenseful atmosphere, where deception is a currency and loyalty is constantly tested. While perhaps not widely recognized, 'Only Love Defies' remains a potent example of international cinema from its era, deserving of rediscovery for its thematic depth and engaging portrayal of ambition and betrayal.
