Cinemavixion Review

Curtis Harrington's "Night Tide" (1961) is a hauntingly atmospheric B-movie that transcends its budget with genuine style and a compelling central performance. Dennis Hopper, in one of his early roles, plays a young sailor stationed in a seaside town who becomes entangled with a mysterious woman, portrayed with ethereal allure by Linda Lawson. She performs as a mermaid at a local carnival, but whispers and strange occurrences soon lead Hopper's character to suspect she might be a genuine siren, responsible for the deaths of men drawn to her during the full moon. The film masterfully blends elements of noir, horror, and romance, creating a palpable sense of unease and fatalistic attraction. Harrington's direction imbues the foggy, moonlit setting with a dreamlike quality, making the supernatural elements feel both uncanny and inevitable. While the plot might tread familiar mythological territory, the execution is remarkably effective, bolstered by Hopper's earnest portrayal of a man caught between desire and dread. "Night Tide" remains a cult favorite, celebrated for its moody visuals and its unique take on the mermaid myth, offering a captivating dive into the darker side of folklore.
