Cinemavixion Review

Napoleon Bonaparte's 1798 expedition to Egypt was a complex undertaking, blending military ambition with a profound scientific endeavor. Departing from Toulon with a formidable force of soldiers and sailors, Napoleon also brought along 167 scholars, tasked with exploring the rich cultural and historical landscape of the land of the pharaohs. The mission, ostensibly to threaten English interests in the Indies by occupying Egypt, was fraught with challenges. Through the eyes of two young scientists, Villiers and Jollois, we witness the 'three long years' of their enthusiastic efforts to disseminate Enlightenment ideals. The narrative highlights the stark cultural contrasts, the inherent tensions between the military objectives and the scientific pursuits, and the violent realities of battles involving Mamelukes and Ottomans, alongside popular revolts and the devastating impact of the plague. Although the expedition concluded with a significant military setback, it marked a watershed moment for scientific discovery, effectively birthing the new field of Egyptology.
