Edward Dmytryk's "Mutiny" (1952) charts a course through the turbulent waters of the War of 1812, offering a brisk adventure yarn anchored by a compelling performance from Angela Lansbury. The film follows Captain James Marshall (Mark Stevens) on a perilous mission to secure an unsanctioned loan from France by running the British blockade. He enlists the help of the disgraced former Navy captain Ben Waldridge (Patrick Knowles), whose crew soon harbors thoughts of mutiny upon discovering the presence of gold. Lansbury, in a role that rightfully steals scenes, portrays a seafaring woman with her own designs on the treasure, adding a layer of intrigue and double-dealing to the high-seas drama. While perhaps not reaching the heights of Dmytryk's later, more acclaimed works like "Crossfire," "Mutiny" remains an engaging period piece that benefits from its solid cast and a plot that skillfully balances action with the ever-present threat of betrayal.
