In "Monkey King: The Golden Cudgel," director Zhou Zhong presents a fantastical take on the legendary weapon. The narrative delves into the origins and whereabouts of the Ruyi Jingu Bang, exploring theories of its post-Buddhahood fate, including its return to the East China Sea or a sealing by the Buddha himself. The story introduces the "Ruyi Gate," a hidden sect tasked with guarding the seal of the three realms. We follow the intertwined fates of Hou Li, a god, Li Feiying, a human, and Yan Tiangang, a demon, who serve as messengers for the seals of Vajra, Human King, and Emperor Master. Their mission takes a perilous turn when the demon Wuxiang Mozun dispatches Shiming to attack the sealed door. The trio must combine their strengths to wield the "Three Seals" and activate the magic needle. However, betrayal strikes when Tiangang is possessed and gravely injures Hou Li. In a selfless act, Feiying sacrifices her spiritual power to aid Hou Li's cultivation, enabling him to break through his limitations, master the Dinghai Shenzhen, and ultimately defeat Wuxiang Mozun, sealing the demon realm's gateway forever. While the film ventures into familiar mythological territory, its exploration of the weapon's legacy and the dynamics between its divine, human, and demonic protagonists offer a fresh perspective on the Monkey King lore.
