MONDOCANE

Cinemavixion Review

Alessandro Celli's 'Mondocane' plunges viewers into a dystopian near-future Taranto, a city rendered uninhabitable and abandoned due to ecological catastrophe. Within this toxic wasteland, a brutal struggle for survival dictates life, with a violent gang known as the "Ants" holding sway. The narrative centers on two orphaned adolescents, Pietro and Christian, whose bond is tested as they navigate the perilous path to acceptance within the gang. Alessandro Borghi delivers a compelling performance as the charismatic leader Testacalda, anchoring the film's exploration of loyalty, brotherhood, and the desperate measures taken for respect in a lawless environment. Despite a modest critical reception, indicated by its Rotten Tomatoes score, and a limited box office run, 'Mondocane' offers a raw and unflinching look at societal collapse and the enduring strength of human connection amidst desolation.
