MONA LISA IS MISSING - THE MAN WHO STOLE THE MASTERPIECE

Cinemavixion Review

In 1911, the art world was stunned by the audacious theft of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa from the Louvre. This documentary, "Mona Lisa is Missing - The Man Who Stole The Masterpiece," directed by Joe Medeiros, delves into the compelling true story of Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian house painter. Peruggia managed to spirit away the iconic masterpiece and keep it hidden for over two years. The film probes the motivations behind this extraordinary act: was Peruggia a nationalist driven by a desire to return the painting to Italy, a cunning thief seeking personal gain, or something else entirely? Through a blend of archival materials, interviews with Peruggia's family, and a narrative shaped by a long-standing fascination with the case, the documentary transcends a simple art heist. It becomes a profound exploration of identity, ambition, and the enduring nature of legacy, proving that sometimes, the truth is indeed far more captivating than fiction.
