In the quaint, yet surprisingly repressed, world of "Miss Polly" (1941), director Fred Guiol crafts a charming comedy that subtly critiques societal prudishness. The film stars the ever-delightful Zasu Pitts as the titular Miss Polly, a woman who finds herself amidst a town where rigid moral codes have led to a two-year drought of marriages. Her efforts, alongside Slim Summerville's handyman character, to rekindle romance and overcome the meddling of a local "Purity League" provide much of the film's gentle humor and narrative drive. The plot, which involves a potent 'Joy Juice' and revelations about the town's elders, offers a lighthearted yet pointed commentary on hypocrisy and the natural inclinations of youth. While perhaps not a groundbreaking cinematic achievement, "Miss Polly" is a diverting piece of 1940s filmmaking, elevated by Pitts's endearing performance and a script that, despite its era, touches on timeless themes of love and social restriction.
