MISS JULIE

Cinemavixion Review

This adaptation of August Strindberg's seminal play, helmed by the Oscar-nominated Mike Figgis, delves into the dark, tempestuous currents of class and desire in 19th-century Sweden. The narrative unfolds over a single, charged midsummer night, charting the complex and ultimately tragic entanglement between an aristocratic young woman and her father's valet. Saffron Burrows and Peter Mulan deliver performances that navigate the psychological intricacies of their characters, exploring the volatile power dynamics and forbidden attraction that define their doomed affair. Figgis's direction, drawing from his celebrated work on 'Leaving Las Vegas,' imbues the story with a palpable sense of tension and psychological depth, making this a compelling, if somber, exploration of human passion and societal constraints.
