METELLO

Cinemavixion Review

Mauro Bolognini's "Metello" stands as a poignant cinematic exploration of class struggle and personal ambition in 19th-century Italy. Based on the novel, the film masterfully chronicles the journey of Metello Salani, portrayed with compelling depth by Massimo Ranieri. From its humble beginnings, the narrative charts Metello's relentless drive to transcend the poverty that plagued his family and his social stratum. The film doesn't shy away from the complexities of this ascent, weaving in themes of love, marriage, and the turbulent political landscape of the era, which, as the local description notes, significantly complicate his path. Ottavia Piccolo and Frank Wolff offer strong supporting performances, anchoring Metello's world. The film garnered significant acclaim, evidenced by its 8 wins and 6 nominations, and is recognized for its historical drama elements. "Metello" is a testament to Bolognini's directorial prowess, offering a rich, character-driven story that resonates with its depiction of resilience and the arduous fight for a better life.
