MESSIAH OF EVIL

Cinemavixion Review

Willard Huyck's 'Messiah of Evil' is a chilling descent into a Californian coastal town plagued by an insidious undead cult. The film masterfully builds a pervasive atmosphere of dread, drawing the viewer into Arletty's increasingly desperate search for her father. The narrative unfolds with a dreamlike, unsettling logic, transforming a seemingly tranquil setting into a nightmarish landscape where ordinary residents harbor sinister secrets. While the plot delves into themes of prophesied returns and the spread of a dangerous new religion, it is the film's commitment to psychological horror and its striking visual compositions that truly linger. Receiving a remarkable 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, 'Messiah of Evil' stands as a testament to low-budget ingenuity and a potent entry in the folk horror subgenre, offering a uniquely terrifying experience that rewards patient observation.
