MARY BEARD EXPLORES THE INSANE DIVERSITY OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE

Cinemavixion Review

Mary Beard's exploration delves into the surprising diversity and inclusivity of the Roman Empire, challenging the notion of enforced cultural uniformity. Through compelling examples, such as a mixed-race woman in York and a Syrian man in Britain, Beard illustrates how individuals could become Roman citizens and ascend to positions of power. The documentary highlights the empire's strategic use of citizenship as a reward for local elites and soldiers, irrespective of their origins. This insightful examination reveals how figures like Quintus Lollius Urbicus, hailing from a modest Algerian town, could achieve the highest echelons of Roman society, underscoring the empire's complex and often underestimated capacity for integration.
