MARATHON

Cinemavixion Review

In the realm of mockumentaries, "Marathon" emerges as a surprisingly sharp and humorous take on the peculiar world of amateur athletics and the often-unseen efforts behind the scenes. Directed by Anthony Guidubaldi and Keith Strausbaugh, this 2021 film plunges viewers into the chaotic training regimens of five distinct individuals preparing for the infamous Devil's Canyon Marathon. The narrative is expertly framed by an "unprofessional" film crew, whose own bumbling attempts to capture the essence of the race add another layer of comedic absurdity. The race itself, a brainchild of the desperate shoe store owner Ed Clap, serves as the eccentric backdrop for a collection of characters as unique as their running motivations. We meet a woman driven by spite and a man attempting a quasi-scientific conquest of the desert course, each offering a distinct flavor of relatable human endeavor turned slightly askew. The film masterfully balances the earnestness of the runners' journeys with the inherent comedy of their often-misguided efforts and the offbeat organization helming the event. "Marathon" boasts a cast that includes Kimia Behpoornia, Jimmy Slonina, and Andrew Hansen, who fully embody their quirky roles, bringing a genuine charm to the mockumentary format. While specific awards or box office figures are not widely publicized, the film's clever writing and directorial vision have garnered it critical praise, with a notable 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, underscoring its success in delivering consistent laughs and a heartwarming, albeit unconventional, story. It's a delightful watch for anyone who appreciates offbeat humor and the sheer, unadulterated absurdity of human ambition.
