Phil Rosen's "Man with Two Lives" from 1942 is a fascinating pre-Code thriller that delves into the murky territory of identity and consequence. Edward Norris delivers a compelling performance as Phillip Bennett, a man seemingly resurrected from death only to find himself possessed by the vengeful spirit of an electrocuted gangster. The film masterfully explores the ensuing crime wave and the protagonist's internal struggle, or rather, the external struggle for control of his very being. Marlo Dwyer and Eleanor Lawson provide solid support as the women caught in Phillip's increasingly dangerous orbit. While not a widely celebrated classic, this B-movie gem offers a potent blend of horror and noir, elevated by its intriguing premise and Norris's intense portrayal of a man literally fighting for his soul.
