LUNA L98: FREEDOM OF THE WHALE

Cinemavixion Review

This inspirational drama, "LUNA L98: FREEDOM OF THE WHALE," draws parallels with beloved films like "Free Willy" and "Whale Rider." Set in the early 2000s, it tells the compelling story of Luna (L98), a solitary killer whale separated from its pod and found residing in Nootka Sound, British Columbia. The narrative centers on Mike Maquinna, a young man from the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation returning home for his father's funeral. His community grapples with the presence of the whale, which many believe to be the spirit of their late Chief. Mike, wrestling with personal disillusionment, finds a connection with the orca. This leads him to embrace his community's traditional reverence for the whale, putting him at odds with government officials and scientists who advocate for the animal's relocation. The film features performances by Jason Priestly, Adam Beach, and Graham Greene.
