LIKE A DIRTY FRENCH NOVEL

Cinemavixion Review

Mike Cuenca's "Like a Dirty French Novel" plunges viewers into a stylishly campy pulp-noir that defies easy categorization. The film masterfully weaves a narrative tapestry featuring estranged twin brothers, a beguiling femme fatale who embraces cosplay, and a mysterious, sexually charged phone caller. Their intertwined fates are further complicated by the mischievous presence of pookas, adding a surreal, almost folkloric layer to the proceedings. Cuenca's direction crafts an atmosphere thick with intrigue and dark humor, amplified by a cast that fully commits to the material's heightened reality. Brittany Samson, Jennifer Daley, and Miles Dougal deliver performances that are both alluring and unsettling, perfectly embodying the film's unique blend of gritty crime and fantastical elements. This is a cinematic experience that revels in its own eccentricities, offering a fresh and captivating take on noir conventions.
