Simon Wincer's "Lightning Jack" offers a curious blend of outback charm and Wild West bravado, anchored by the inimitable Paul Hogan. The film charts the unlikely friendship between aging Australian outlaw Jack Kane and the mute Ben Doyle, portrayed with earnestness by Cuba Gooding Jr. Hogan, reprising his persona from "Crocodile Dundee," imbues Jack with a roguish charisma, even as the narrative explores his yearning for recognition and a final, legendary heist. The chemistry between Hogan and Gooding Jr. is the film's strongest asset, evolving from a peculiar hostage situation to a genuine camaraderie. While the plot occasionally treads familiar territory, its Australian sensibilities and a surprisingly poignant exploration of identity and legacy elevate it beyond a simple Western romp.
