LIGHTNING JACK

Cinemavixion Review

Simon Wincer's "Lightning Jack" offers a curious blend of outback charm and Wild West larceny, anchored by the inimitable Paul Hogan. The film charts the unlikely camaraderie forged between aging outlaw Jack Kane and the mute but resourceful Ben Doyle, portrayed with earnestness by Cuba Gooding Jr. Hogan, reprising his signature larrikin persona, injects the narrative with a dry wit, even as the plot meanders through familiar heist tropes. The chemistry between Hogan and Gooding Jr. provides the emotional core, showcasing a touching mentorship that transcends language barriers. While critical reception, as indicated by its modest Rotten Tomatoes score, suggests it didn't entirely hit the mark for all audiences, the film's $16 million box office performance points to a dedicated following. "Lightning Jack" is a gentle, good-natured Western comedy that, despite its flaws, offers a pleasant journey with its charismatic leads, proving that sometimes, the most memorable partnerships are the most unexpected.
