LIFE WITH FATHER

Cinemavixion Review

Michael Curtiz's "Life with Father" is a delightful excursion into late 19th-century New York, masterfully adapting Clarence Day's beloved autobiography. William Powell embodies the titular father, a stockbroker who, despite his pronouncements, finds his authority playfully usurped by his astute wife, Irene Dunne, and their growing brood. The film shines in its portrayal of domestic comedy, where familial demands and societal expectations—particularly the unexpected revelation of the father's unbaptized status—create humorous yet heartwarming situations. Elizabeth Taylor, in an early role, adds youthful charm. Garnering critical acclaim with a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes and four Oscar nominations, this film remains a testament to witty dialogue, strong performances, and enduring family dynamics. Its enduring appeal lies in its gentle humor and relatable depiction of a household where love, not just control, reigns supreme.
