Roger Corman's 'Last Woman on Earth' plunges viewers into a stark, post-apocalyptic vision of Puerto Rico, a setting that becomes as much a character as the desperate survivors. Initially appearing as a straightforward tale of survival after a mysterious global event eliminates humanity, the film, co-written by and starring Robert Towne, quickly evolves into a tense character study. Betsy Jones-Moreland and Antony Carbone deliver compelling performances as a couple grappling not only with isolation but also with the psychological toll of their predicament. Corman masterfully uses the confined environment to amplify the simmering conflicts and existential dread. While its B-movie roots are evident, 'Last Woman on Earth' offers a thought-provoking exploration of human nature under extreme duress, making it a fascinating, albeit bleak, entry in the sci-fi canon.
