LA CITTÀ DEL SOLE

Cinemavixion Review

Gianni Amelio's "La Città del Sole" offers a compelling dive into the tumultuous life of Tommaso Campanella. Set in the vibrant yet oppressive Naples of the late 16th century, the film chronicles the intellectual and spiritual journey of the monk, whose radical ideas led to accusations of heresy and a life sentence. Amelio masterfully reconstructs the historical atmosphere, immersing the viewer in Campanella's world of philosophical inquiry and political intrigue. Giulio Brogi delivers a powerful performance as the titular figure, embodying both the intellectual fervor and the profound suffering of a man ahead of his time. The film is a poignant exploration of the conflict between free thought and established power, a timeless theme rendered with historical specificity and dramatic intensity.
