KING ÆTHELRED'S REVENGE: ARCHAEOLOGISTS EXAMINE ST. BRICE'S DAY MASSACRE VICTIMS

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary delves into the brutal reality of the St. Brice's Day Massacre, a pivotal and grim event in English history ordered by King Æthelred the Unready in 1002. The narrative expertly reconstructs the context surrounding the king's decree, driven by fears of Danish influence, and explores the tragic consequences of this indiscriminate violence against Danish settlers. Beyond the massacre, the film also offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the era, highlighted by the discovery of the Lewis Chessmen. These exquisite ivory carvings serve as a tangible link to the enduring Scandinavian presence and artistic sophistication in Britain. The documentary skillfully balances historical analysis with compelling archaeological findings, providing a thought-provoking exploration of power, fear, and cultural exchange in the medieval period.
