Jean Yarbrough's 1941 B-movie, "King of the Zombies," is a delightfully campy affair that, despite its low budget, delivers a surprising amount of chills and chuckles. Set on a spooky island, the film follows three stranded travelers who stumble upon an evil doctor, Dr. Sangre, who is in league with foreign spies and, as the title suggests, master of the undead. The plot, while convoluted, involves a downed pilot, secret missions, hypnotism, and of course, zombies. Dick Purcell, Joan Woodbury, and the invaluable Mantan Moreland lead the cast, with Moreland's comedic timing providing much-needed levity amidst the horror. While it may not have garnered major awards, "King of the Zombies" remains a cult favorite for its earnest, if sometimes unintentionally funny, attempt at blending horror, adventure, and comedy.
