Cinemavixion Review

Released in 1941, "King of the Zombies" is a curious blend of horror and comedy, a product of Monogram Pictures that has since carved out a niche for itself in B-movie history. Directed by Jean Yarbrough, the film stars Dick Purcell, Joan Woodbury, and the invaluable Mantan Moreland as Jefferson Jackson, whose comedic timing and physical performance are essential to the film's charm. The plot, while convoluted by today's standards, follows a downed pilot who lands on an island inhabited by a sinister doctor dabbling in the occult and, as the title suggests, the reanimation of the dead. Moreland's character becomes the primary target of the titular zombies, providing much of the film's humor through his reactions to the increasingly bizarre and terrifying events. Though it garnered a single Oscar nomination, "King of the Zombies" is best remembered for its low-budget ingenuity and Moreland's standout performance, making it a noteworthy entry for fans of classic horror-comedies.
