KEAS - NEW ZEALAND'S WITTY DAREDEVILS

Cinemavixion Review

In the realm of avian documentaries, "Keas - New Zealand's Witty Daredevils" emerges as a compelling exploration of one of nature's most intellectually gifted creatures. Directed by Volker Arzt and Angelika Sigl, this 2015 film delves into the extraordinary lives of the Kea parrots, a species that defies conventional parrot stereotypes by thriving in the cold, harsh mountain climates of New Zealand. The documentary masterfully illustrates how these birds have developed exceptional intelligence and resourcefulness to survive in an environment devoid of native mammals, showcasing their problem-solving abilities and insatiable curiosity. However, the film also poignantly highlights the escalating threats posed by human encroachment and introduced predators, such as cats, dogs, rats, and martens. "Keas" serves not only as an educational piece on avian intelligence but also as a vital call to action, shedding light on the conservation efforts dedicated to preserving this remarkable species. Its narrative, enriched by the insights of scientists and conservationists, offers a profound look at the delicate balance between wildlife and the ever-expanding human footprint, making it a must-watch for nature enthusiasts and advocates alike.
