JULY RISING

Cinemavixion Review

Chauncey Crail's "July Rising" is a poignant coming-of-age drama that delves into the complexities of agency and destiny in a restrictive small-town environment. Set in 2019, the film centers on sixteen-year-old Andy, portrayed with a compelling blend of vulnerability and burgeoning resolve by Alexa Yeames. Upon inheriting her grandfather's orchard, Andy finds herself under the guardianship of her city-dwelling aunt, a transition that forces her to confront the limited choices available to young women in her community. The narrative, penned by Crail himself, masterfully explores themes of tradition versus personal aspiration. The performances from Johanna Putnam and Devin Ashley Whitten further enrich the tapestry of Andy's world, highlighting the societal pressures and familial dynamics at play. While the film garnered one nomination, its strength lies in its intimate portrayal of a young woman's struggle for self-determination. "July Rising" is a thoughtful examination of heritage, independence, and the arduous, yet ultimately rewarding, journey toward defining one's own future.
