JALISCO, DON'T BACKSLIDE

Cinemavixion Review

Miguel Morayta's "Jalisco, Don't Backslide" plunges into the heart of rural Mexico, weaving a tale of vengeance and forbidden love. The narrative follows Salvador Pérez Gómez, an orphan whose parents' mysterious deaths set him on a path of retribution, nurtured by a devoted farmhand and a Spanish bartender. As an adult, Salvador finds himself ensnared in a passionate, yet perilous, romance with Carmela, a young woman whose family, particularly her brothers, stands firmly against their union. The film grapples with themes of familial duty, societal constraints, and the enduring pursuit of justice against formidable odds. Rodolfo de Anda delivers a compelling performance as Salvador, embodying both the character's simmering rage and his tender affections, while Sonia Infante brings a captivating presence to Carmela. Morayta skillfully directs this melodrama, capturing the stark beauty of the Mexican landscape and the intense emotional turmoil of its characters.
