JAKARTA - MEGACITY

Cinemavixion Review

Nicola Graef's "Jakarta - Megacity" offers a compelling look into Indonesia's sprawling capital, a city of over ten million souls grappling with the dual forces of rapid urbanization and environmental precarity. The documentary masterfully captures the essence of this vibrant metropolis, showcasing its rich tapestry of cultures and faiths that coexist amidst significant challenges. Jakarta's struggle with severe pollution and recurrent flooding, exacerbated by its foundation on swampy terrain, is presented with unflinching honesty. Yet, the film does not solely focus on adversity; it also highlights the city's ambitious drive towards modernization. The ongoing development of a new mass rapid transit system, intended to combat crippling traffic congestion, serves as a potent symbol of Jakarta's forward momentum. Through evocative cinematography and astute narration, "Jakarta - Megacity" provides viewers with a nuanced understanding of a city that is a fascinating confluence of tradition and cutting-edge modernity.
